MEETINGS FOR 2010 July 12, 2010 Charles Hickman and his daughter Charlene McNeill have developed a program titled either "Divine Proportion" or "Flowers by the Numbers." The divine proportion is related to beauty and Charles will discuss several examples of adherence to this ratio; architecture, art, plants and music. Charlene, who is an occupational therapist, will illustrate, using volunteers, how the divine proportion relates to human anatomy, particularly the hands and arms. Charles will also discuss experiencies related to taking pictures in a number of countries of flowers that adhere to a mathematical series (no math experience required). Plan to attend an informative and interesting meeting on July 12, 2010. May 14, 2010 Chris Hobson, Southern Company chief environmental officer and senior vice president of Research and Environmental Affairs, will be the speaker at the spring meeting. The date is Friday, May 14, 2010. The luncheon will be held at the Pelham Civic Complex at 600 Amphitheater Road, Pelham, Alabama. March 8, 2010 Our March meeting will be on March 8, 2010 at 1:00pm at Inverness Building 42, Room 130. The meeting features a presentation titled "Layers of the Earth: Can the Past Be Our Future?" by Richard A. Esposito, Southern Company research geologist. Richard expects to receive his Ph. D. in environmental engineering from UAB in 2010. He is also an adjunct instructor in environmental geology at Samford University and is Chair of the Board of the Alabama Wildlife Center. January 11, 2010 The January meeting will be on Monday, January 11, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at Inverness Building 42, Room 130. This meeting will feature a presentation on Southern Company's research into the impact of electric vehicles on the Southern Electric System. The presenters will be Bryan Coley, SCS research engineer specializing in electric transmission, and Cedric Daniels, marketing electric transportation product manager. MEETINGS FOR 2009 November 11, 2009 The luncheon will be held at Vestavia Country Club. The feature entertainment will be Jerry Ryan, a member of the Three on a String group, who has a solo act that is quite good. A luncheon invitation and sign up form will be distributed in October. September 14, 2009 The meeting will include a presentation by George Marling, Southern Retirees Human Resources representative, who will discuss any changes in our benefit plan and will be available to answer any questions about our October sign up packets. Jessica Joyner, Southern Company United Way representative, will discuss the campaign and receive our $750 contribution. July 13, 2009 Our July 13 speaker will be Vicky Sullivan, Climate Strategy Manager, Southern Company Research and Environmental Affairs, who will speak on Climate Change Legislation, The Real Impact. Our meeting will be held in room 130 of Inverness 42 at 1:00 p.m. We encourage you to join us at 12:00 noon in the Inverness cafeteria prior to the meeting. May 11, 2009 As is our routine, the annual luncheon will be held at the Pelham Civic Complex. Registration of retirees, spouses and guests will begin at 10:30 a. m. Lunch will be served at 12:00 noon, followed by the program speaker, James H. Miller, III, Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer of Southern Nuclear Operating Company. His message is sure to be of interest to us. March 9, 2009 Lauren Whitt, PhD is responsible for the creation and implementation of the SoutherLifeStyle wellness program forAlabama Power, Southern Company Services in Alabama and SouthernLINC. This responsibilty includes coordinating health screenings, flu shots, health education and behavior change initiatives for over 8,000 employees and 5,000 retirees. Her background in collegiate coaching, sport psychology and athletic administration provides her with experience in team building, interpersonal communication and leadership development. Sounds like a great opportunity to learn about company wellness programs and to hone your communication skills. January 12, 2009 Penny Manuel, from SCS Engineering and Construction Services, will speak to us about ongoing projects in the Southern electric system and the outlook for the coming year. Penny is quite knowledgeable about the Southern system and should be able to answer a wide range of questions, perhaps even give us an insight on the future of the company stock. MEETINGS FOR 2008 November 12, 2008 Susan Murphy, a regular columnist for the Over the Mountain Journal and the Birmingham News, will talk to us about life and how it can only get better! Her columns always "tell it like it is" in the real world. She writes about every day things that happen to her and her family. She has won numerous writing awards in contests throughout the South and is a frequent speaker at the Alabama Writers Conclave, the oldest writers' organization in the United States. September 8, 2008 Dr. James Tent, a historian of modern Germany and the department chair of history at UAB, has focused his research on the evolution of German society and politics since 1945. His books include a study of Allied intelligence and combined arms efforts during World War II to secure the Normandy invasion against German naval counterattacks. All veterans of all branches of service and the sons and daughters of veterans will be quite interested in this presentation. July 14, 2008 Dr. James Lamb, curator of paleontology at the McWane Science Center in Birmingham, will tell us about Alabama as it was millions of years ago, including the dinosaurs that roamed throughout Alabama. Dr. Lamb has been on hundreds of fossil digs and has taught geology at a number of universities. He is the driving force behind the dinosaur exhibit at the Center, which displays actual dinosaur fossils found in Alabama. The exhibit features an Alabama relative of T-rex. May 12, 2008 Mr. Bill Johnson, vice president of Alabama Power Company and president of the Alabama Power Foundation, will be our speaker at the May luncheon meeting. His presentation will focus on the support provided by the Foundation on education, civic activities, health services, the environment and the arts. The Foundation assists technical training programs designed to address the need in Alabama for a more skilled work force. Join us at the Pelham Civic Center for an interesting program. March 10, 2008 An interesting program will be presented by the National Weather Service (NWS). Learn the difference between a watch, a warning and an alert. Learn about activities at the NWS, including free classes offered. Learn some common sense safety tips related to severe weather when you are outside in the weather. If a threat of severe weather occurs on March 10, the program will be rescheduled because all NWS personnel will be needed to alert us to threats. January 14, 2008 Dr. Charles D. Amsler, a biology professor at UAB, will be our speaker. His presentation will include a general description of living and working at two of the United States Antarctic Program bases and will highlight the local flora and fauna at each. Topics will include things you can see above the surface of the water such as penguins and seals as well as observations of the animals and plants that live on the sea floor. Dr. Amsler and his wife Margaret have been honored with the naming of an island in Antarctica by the United States Board of Geographic names. MEETINGS FOR 2007 November 14, 2007 Leah Rawls Atkins will give us a presentation on her book Developed for the Service of Alabama: The Centennial History of the Alabama Power Company. Leah is a renowned author of several books, one of which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Be sure to bring your copy of the book to the meeting to obtain a personal autograph. September 10, 2007 The Seasoned Performers, an active group of senior volunteer actors, will present a program titled Seasons of Man. This program celebrates being a man with the particular experiences involved throughout a lifetime. This vigorous and humorous piece, read by four of the Seasoned Readers, will touch a chord with all ages and genders. July 9, 2007 Dr. William (Bill) Foster, Chief Executive Officer and Director of the Birmingham Zoo will lead us on a walk down Memory Lane of the Birmingham Zoo. The growth and evolvement of the zoo, as well as a glimpse of the exciting things planned for the near future, will be discussed. Under his leadership, the Birmingham Zoo was named as the number one tourist attraction in the State of Alabama in 2006. Plan to attend our July 9, 2007 meeting to learn more about the zoo so we can better enjoy future visits. May 14, 2007 Mr. Sam Sumner will discuss the Mississippi Power Company response to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina. Sam was responsible for the restoration of plants Watson, Eaton and Sweatt after the hurricane struck. His presentation will not only show us the stark reality of the damage but also will illustrate the positive results produced by the efforts of dedicated personnel. The SCS Retirees Board of Directors will meet at 10:00am and registration will begin at 10:30am. Seating for lunch will begin at 11:50am.
